Your Party: The Launch of a New Challenge to Labour
Your Party is the provisional name for a new, left-wing political movement in the UK, co-founded by veteran socialist Jeremy Corbyn and fellow former Labour Member of Parliament, Zarah Sultana. Launched over the summer of 2025, the party aims to fill the political vacuum on the left, positioning itself as a democratic, socialist alternative to the increasingly centre-ground Labour Party under Keir Starmer.
The Founding Conference and Name Selection
The party is currently holding its inaugural conference in Liverpool, a crucial event designed to establish its formal structures, organisational strategy, and program. A key item on the agenda for the reported 50,000 members is the selection of an official name.
The shortlist of names put forward to members includes:
- Your Party (The current temporary name)
- Our Party
- Popular Alliance
- For The Many
The final choice, which is being decided by members via a vote, will be announced by Jeremy Corbyn on Sunday, signifying a pivotal moment in the party’s formal identity.
Early Turmoil and Infighting
Despite its rapid membership growth and significant grassroots enthusiasm, Your Party has been plagued by months of highly publicised internal disagreements and “open warfare” since its launch.
- Co-Founder Conflict: There have been clear disputes between Corbyn and Sultana regarding the structure of the party, its initial launch strategy, and the handling of funds raised from members.
- MP Exits: The party initially attracted four independent MPs but has already seen two of them quit amid persistent infighting. Shockat Adam and Iqbal Mohamed cited “false allegations and smears” and “veiled prejudice against Muslim men” as reasons for their departures, highlighting the deep internal struggles for power and direction.
- Leadership Model Debate: A core issue being debated at the founding conference is whether the party should adopt a traditional single leader model or embrace a more radical “collective, lay-member leadership model,” reflecting its desire to “do politics differently.”
The Left-Wing Void
The emergence of Your Party underscores the political fragmentation in the UK. With the Labour Party moving to the right on certain issues, Corbyn and Sultana are attempting to consolidate the left-wing vote, particularly among those disillusioned with the direction of mainstream UK politics.
The party aims to build a mass, democratic, socialist movement advocating for economic justice and peace. However, it faces a tough battle, not only against the established Labour party but also against other left-of-centre groups like the Green Party, which has also gained significant support from disaffected voters.
