Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has described his decision to sign a new contract at St James’ Park as a ‘no-brainer’, despite widespread speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United over the summer. Hall, 22, extended his commitment to the Magpies until the summer of 2031.
Hall’s decision followed a meeting with new head coach Matthias Jaissle, whose vision for the club and positive impact on the squad were pivotal factors. The former Chelsea left-back had been a consistent subject of transfer rumours involving Manchester United throughout the summer window, as reported by ESPN and talkSPORT.
Influence of Matthias Jaissle on New Deal
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Hall acknowledged the ‘positive’ aspect of being linked with a club like Manchester United, noting it indicated he was performing well. However, he stated that the prospect of staying at Newcastle became clear after discussions with Jaissle.
Hall explained, “I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve.” He added that after only a few conversations and training sessions, he realised Jaissle would be beneficial for the club and that improving the squad was crucial. “As soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign,” Hall stated.
Thriving Under New Management
Since Jaissle’s arrival, Hall has shown strong form, earning a recall to the England squad and scoring in Newcastle’s recent 2-1 victory over Hull City. Hall praised Jaissle, describing him as a “top guy” who provides him with the freedom to express himself on the pitch, provided he maintains his defensive duties and work rate.
“He’s been so good to me,” Hall remarked. “He gives me the licence to express myself as long as I do the defensive work and do the running that’s required for this position, which is quite a lot of work.”
Long-Term Commitment to Newcastle
Despite signing a new contract, Hall recognised that interest in his talent might continue beyond the current season. When asked about his long-term commitment, he affirmed that as long as his personal ambitions align with those of Newcastle United, he sees himself remaining at the club for an extended period.
“I’m really grateful for the contract that I’ve received and the trust that I’ve been given from the board and from the manager and everything like that,” Hall told Chronicle Live. He emphasised taking things “game by game” and doing his best for the club, confident that if shared ambitions are met, he will be “here for a long time.”
