Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has lauded young winger Ryan McAidoo, describing him as “the kind of winger I love” ahead of the club’s Carabao Cup third-round clash against Norwich City. The 18-year-old is anticipated to start for City in the match, scheduled for Thursday, 17th September, at the Etihad Stadium. This fixture marks the start of City’s defence of the trophy they won in the 2025/26 season, and early rounds are often opportunities for promising youngsters to gain senior experience, as reported by Manchester City FC.
Maresca’s Trust in Academy Talent
Maresca has a strong reputation for trusting Academy graduates, citing their unique passion for the club. He explained that a player like Phil Foden, who came through the Academy, has a different feeling for City compared to players from other clubs. Maresca stated that age is not a barrier to selection, emphasising that choices depend on a player’s attitude, work ethic, and ability. He ensures that when young players drop back to the Elite Development Squad (EDS), a member of his staff accompanies them to ensure they maintain the right behaviour and performance, and serve as good examples to others, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Ryan McAidoo’s Impact
Ryan McAidoo, who joined City from Chelsea’s academy two years ago, has already made a significant impression. Maresca highlighted his fearless approach, his constant desire for the ball, and his aggressive one-on-one style, noting that McAidoo always looks to go forward rather than playing backward. Assistant Pep Lijnders reportedly described McAidoo’s pressing as ‘insane’ after he scored on his debut against Exeter last season. The 18-year-old has already made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and featured in FA Cup matches last term, as well as recent games against Crystal Palace and Coventry, according to Hayters. Staff have also noted McAidoo’s strong attitude, including his habit of clearing up after himself at meals.
Other Promising Youngsters
Alongside McAidoo, two other Academy talents, Kaden Braithwaite and Floyd Samba, have been permanently integrated into first-team training by Maresca after the pre-season tour. Braithwaite, a physically strong defender, made his City debut almost two years ago at just 16, making him the third-youngest player to feature for the club. Capable of playing both central defender and full-back, Braithwaite improved his duelling ability by taking boxing classes after being tasked with becoming more aggressive on the pitch. He also captained the Under-18s to an FA Youth Cup victory.
Floyd Samba, an attacking midfielder, has progressed through every age group at City’s academy. Known for his creative play, ability with both feet, and physical strength, Samba was the top scorer at the KDB Cup in 2024 and scored in the FA Youth Cup final. He signed his first professional contract in August and, despite facing strong competition for minutes in his position, is hoped to develop by observing senior players daily. Both Braithwaite and Samba have continued to play for youth teams this season, including starting in a UEFA Youth League match.

Maresca has promised changes to the side that recently defeated Manchester United, indicating potential starts or significant minutes for McAidoo, Braithwaite, and Samba.
