Network Rail and Oxfordshire County Council have formally published the verified timeline for the final phase of the multi-million-pound Oxford Station masterplan and Botley Road rail bridge reconstruction, confirming that vehicular traffic, public buses, and segregated cycleways through the critical western transport corridor will fully reopen ahead of schedule in March 2027. The joint announcement follows the successful completion of complex utility diversion works beneath the rail tracks, which required rerouting over thirty major telecommunication, gas, electricity, and water mains.
The Botley Road rail bridge closure, initially implemented to facilitate the structural replacement of the Victorian railway bridge and the construction of a new fifth track platform at Oxford Railway Station, represents the largest single infrastructure upgrade in Oxfordshire in over two decades. The project will drastically improve rail capacity between Oxford, London Paddington, Birmingham, and the incoming East West Rail link connecting Oxford directly to Milton Keynes and Cambridge.
Francis McGarry, Network Rail’s Western Route Director, joined county transport officials at the Botley Road site office to deliver a comprehensive engineering briefing. “Replacing a 150-year-old railway bridge directly above an active four-track railway while excavating deep beneath the water table of the River Thames has presented some of the most intricate engineering challenges our teams have ever encountered,” McGarry explained. “Thanks to innovative micro-tunneling techniques and the extraordinary dedication of our workforce, we have resolved the subterranean utility complexities and are now on track to deliver a world-class station and a vastly improved, flood-resilient highway for Oxford.”
The newly reconstructed bridge structure offers substantial permanent benefits for local transport users. The roadway beneath the bridge has been significantly widened to accommodate full double-decker bus clearance, dedicated four-meter-wide segregated bi-directional cycle tracks, and elevated pedestrian walkways with high-output LED illumination and anti-slip permeable paving.
Councillor Judy Roberts, County Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Development Strategy, praised the resilience of West Oxford residents and local businesses throughout the prolonged construction period. “We recognize that the Botley Road closure has required tremendous patience and adaptation from our residents, traders, and commuters in Botley, Osney Island, and Cumnor,” Cllr Roberts stated. “The confirmation of this definitive reopening timeline provides vital certainty. When fully reopened, this transformed corridor will provide safer cycling, faster public transit, and a magnificent new gateway to Oxford Station.”
To support local businesses during the final phase of works, the county council and Network Rail will continue operating the dedicated pedestrian and cyclist transfer pathway beneath the bridge, alongside free cargo-bike transport deliveries for local retail orders.
